I’m Not in Pain – Why Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?

Sometimes your dentist will tell you that you need to have a tooth pulled, yet you’re not in any pain. Given that tooth extractions in Richardson are typically dentists’ last resort, why would you be encouraged to undergo this procedure? Here’s some information to clear the air.

Why a Tooth Extraction May be Recommended

Here are some of the reasons your dentist may suggest having a tooth pulled:

Tooth Decay

One of the more common reasons for a tooth extraction is severe decay. Cavities are tiny holes that bore into teeth. When they aren’t treated early enough, they can cause painful damage that may require a root canal to repair. If the tooth becomes too compromised to restore, your dentist may suggest extracting it.

Health Risk

Patients who are being treated for cancer or undergoing preparation for an organ transplant may be at a greater risk of developing a serious infection that could be life-threatening. If there is a badly infected tooth, the dentist may recommend pulling it to eliminate the chance of an overall health crisis developing.

Bone Loss

In addition to causing gum loss and recession, a severely infected tooth can lead to diminished jawbone mass and a loose tooth. If the problem persists, the tooth could dislodge and require dental implantation to restore your smile. However, there may be a new challenge to contend with – diminished jawbone mass and the need for a bone grafting procedure so that the implant can be successfully placed.

It’s much easier to have a badly damaged or decayed tooth extracted before it causes these and other problems.

Gum Disease

Poor dental hygiene and failure to maintain regular dental visits are the main contributors to gum disease, a condition that affects over half the adult population in America. If the condition goes untreated for too long, it can infect the bones and supportive tissue, resulting in loose teeth that need to be removed.

Crowded Mouth

If you’re considering orthodontic treatment (braces) for your child, the orthodontist will start by performing a careful examination. If it’s determined that your child has a crowded mouth (not enough space to straighten the teeth), an extraction may be recommended. In some situations, this means removing the wisdom teeth, even if they haven’t erupted yet.

Because Every Situation is Unique

Dentists understand that each patient has a unique set of needs and that all situations aren’t the same. That’s why it’s important to receive regular dental care, as it allows for any changes in your oral health to be identified and treated as soon as possible. If an extraction is needed, you can count on your dentist in Richardson to help you recover effectively and expeditiously so you can get your life back on track!
