Dental Implant Myths: 3 Common Misunderstandings

Dental implants are considered the pinnacle of tooth restoration because they provide so many unique advantages over other options like dentures and dental bridges. Despite this, many patients hesitate to move forward with treatment. Often, this is because they’ve heard one of the many myths around dental implants. Incorrect information or preconceived notions lead people to false beliefs about this incredibly successful method. Keep reading to discover the truth behind these 3 commonly held misunderstandings.

Myth #1: Dental Implants are Purely Cosmetic

Many people think dental implants are only good for enhancing your appearance and question why they should choose them over other choices that do the same thing. The truth is, however, that they can preserve your facial structure and oral health, too.

When you lose a tooth, your body reabsorbs bone mass from that part of your jaw because it’s no longer needed for support. This in turn weakens your jawbone which begins to deteriorate which ages your appearance. You’ll develop sunken cheeks and saggy skin on top of a less defined jawline. Over time, it can become so depleted that it can no longer support your remaining teeth and you could lose them all.

Dental implants include a rod that’s inserted into your jaw to function like a root which stimulates your bone every time you bite down or chew. As a result, your jaw remains healthy and active, so you don’t have to worry about your facial structure collapsing.

Myth #2: Dental Implants Look Fake

The metal rod in your jaw is capped with a tooth-shaped crown. In the past, they were made of metallic alloys which leads people to believe that these false teeth stand out awkwardly among your natural pearly whites. That may have been true in years gone by, but no longer is today.

Thanks to more recent advancements in dental technology and materials, dental crowns now can be made of tooth-colored composite resin or porcelain which can match the shade of your smile. No one will be able to know just by looking that it’s not the tooth you started with. That means your dental implant will both act and look more like a natural tooth than other treatments.

Myth #3: Dental Implants Don’t Last

No one wants to go through the steps of having an implant surgery just to have to repair it in a few years. Fortunately, dental implants are incredibly effective and resilient. They’re known to have a success rate of 95% in people under 40 years old, and 85% in those over 40. They are also known to last 10+ years if cared for properly. You won’t have to worry about replacing anything anytime soon.

By investing in dental implants now, you’ll have a strong restoration that will enhance both your appearance as well as your dental well-being for many years to come!
